Summerlea Community Primary School

Sports Premium

PE and Sport play a very important part in the life of Summerlea School and children receive at least two, 1-hour sessions per week, dedicated to physical activity teaching in the curriculum.

We believe that physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of children and through participation in sport and physical education they can learn more about key values such as teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others.

How is Summerlea School using the Sports Premium?

We use our Sports Premium funding in a variety of ways.  A significant proportion is spent on providing our teachers with professional development opportunities, which can often be provided by our partnership with The Littlehampton Academy and The Angmering School.  This has provided opportunities for staff to develop their knowledge and confidence in different areas of PE and sport, thus giving the teacher more confidence and skills in that given area. This has promoted sustainability as the skills and knowledge learnt continue to have an impact on future cohorts.

We have also developed our provision and increased opportunities for children to participate in sports and sports related activities. This included having an annual Sports Week in school, improving the range of extra-curricular clubs which are available and also increased our involvement in competitive sporting events with other local schools. The overall impact of this strategy was that greater number of children became involved in PE and sports, developing not only sporting skills but also their minds and social skills making children more ready to learn in the classroom.

We have also improved our sporting provision for children at lunchtimes, by providing a range of equipment to use, as well as providing training for lunchtime staff to support children in their games and activities.

Links with The Brighton and Hove Football Foundation

At Summerlea, we currently employ two coaches from The Brighton and Hove Football Foundation who deliver 20 hours a week of specialist PE provision to groups of children across the school in addition to the statutory two hours.  These groups could focus around gifted and talented sports children to supporting different groups in preparing for tournaments or increasing love and participation.

Due to these strong links, we are often asked to attend the BHAFC training ground in Lancing, or to take part in events held at the Amex Community Stadium in Falmer.
